The First Regatta of the Onondaga Yacht Club

While at the OHA, I found a folder on boating/sailing.  In it, was a clipping from the June 1, 1886 Syracuse Courier titled “The Mistletoe Victorious”, discussing the first regatta sponsored by the Onondaga Yacht Club.  The language is very 19th century:”The members of the Onondaga yacht club must be particular indeed if they could want a better day for their first regatta than yesterday” is the first sentence.  According to the article, 700 people viewed the race from the pier at Salina (at the south end of the lake).  Apparently, the reporter was very impressed with the entire event, pointing out that given all of the other events going on that weekend in the Syracuse area, attendance was very good and he termed the regatta “a great success.”
